As evening arrived, we wandered through the lantern-lit streets of Kifune before returning to the hotel for a relaxed dinner celebration.

Getting Ready and a First Look at Their Kyoto Hotel
The wedding day began quietly at the couple’s hotel in Kyoto. I photographed the small details and candid moments as they prepared separately, allowing the morning to unfold naturally without rushing them through a long list of posed photographs.
Once they were both ready, the couple shared a private first look in their hotel room. The groom’s expression when he saw his bride was filled with pure happiness. It was an emotional and joyful moment, giving them a little time alone before joining their friends for the ceremony.

A Kyoto Japanese Garden Wedding in Autumn
After their first look, we travelled north into the mountains for their ceremony in a private Japanese garden.
The garden was surrounded by deep red and orange autumn foliage, with moss-covered stones, traditional lanterns and a wooden pavilion creating a timeless backdrop. The setting felt peaceful and secluded—a world away from Kyoto’s busy streets and popular sightseeing areas.
The couple gathered with a small group of close friends for their intimate outdoor ceremony. Rather than following a large or highly formal wedding schedule, they could focus entirely on one another and the people who had travelled to Japan to celebrate with them. Located in Kyoto’s northern mountains, Kifune feels very different from central Kyoto. The area surrounding Kifune Shrine is known for its forested landscape, narrow roads, traditional buildings and the gentle sound of the river. As evening arrived, the warm light from lanterns and restaurants created a romantic contrast with the fading natural light.
The bride wrapped herself in a warm coat, and we wandered through the quiet streets together. These evening portraits felt relaxed, atmospheric and unmistakably Kyoto.
